Our Story

Haley and Dave, 2005

We met in 2003 while living in far northern Maine.  Dave immediately realized that Haley was the kindest, sweetest woman he had ever met, and promptly fell in love with her.  And Haley knew how lucky she was to find someone so understanding, supportive and loving as Dave.

Though very much in love, goals took us in different directions over the next seven years.  Haley pursued her dream of competing in the Olympics, living and training in Maine, then home in Lake Placid. Dave also continued his racing, moving to Bend, Oregon, then began his coaching career in Denver, Colorado.  The depth and strength of our love sustained us while apart.

We were engaged on Christmas Day, 2008 while on a ski at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.  “We were driving from Haley’s home in Lake Placid to my parent’s in Ripton, splitting Christmas Day between families, when we decided to stop off for a quick ski.  I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous on a pair of skis, but I waited until we were in a quiet spot, slid to one knee, fumbled to find the ring in my jacket pocket, and asked Haley if she would marry me.  She said yes, the ring fit perfectly, we kissed and skied off into gently falling snow.  Perfect.”
